El 19 de noviembre de 1947, la víspera de su boda con la princesa Isabel, el príncipe Felipe recibió el título de “Duque de Edimburgo” de manos de su futuro suegro, Jorge VI. También recibió los títulos subsidiarios de conde de Merioneth y barón de Greenwich, pero el título de duque de Edimburgo es el que le resultaba más cercano y cómo durante 70 años se lo reconoció en el mundo.
Según recuerda el especialista en asuntos de realeza Harry Mount en The Telegraph, no es que el Príncipe Felipe fuera nuevo en esto de los títulos. En 1921, nació como Príncipe Felipe de Grecia y Dinamarca, gracias a su ascendencia patrilineal de Jorge I de Grecia y Christian IX de Dinamarca, y estaba en línea de ambos tronos al nacer. En 1947 renunció a sus títulos reales danés y griego como reflejo de su casi inevitable futuro papel de esposo de la Reina del Reino Unido.
En sus 74 años como Duque de Edimburgo, hizo el título mucho más famoso y distinguido que cualquiera de los anteriores poseedores del título. Gracias a la fundación en 1956 del Premio del Duque de Edimburgo, el principal galardón para jóvenes del mundo, también se ha convertido en sinónimo de aventura.
Tal era su afecto por el título que, cuando la Reina subió al trono en 1952 y se planteó la complicada cuestión de cómo debía llamarse la nueva casa real, se dijo que Felipe quería que el nombre fuera Casa de Edimburgo. El tío materno del Duque, el conde Mountbatten, se mostró partidario de la Casa de Mountbatten, por su propia línea. Pero fue Winston Churchillq quien insistió en que se mantuviera el nombre de Windsor.
Ofuscado Felipe declaró: “No soy más que una maldita ameba. Soy el único hombre del país al que no se le permite dar su nombre a sus propios hijos”.
En 1960, la Reina declaró que Mountbatten-Windsor sería el apellido de sus descendientes por línea masculina, que no son príncipes, princesas o Altezas Reales. Dado que Mountbatten fue adoptado por su línea de sangre materna, el Príncipe Felipe tuvo entonces algún efecto sobre el apellido real.
¿Y qué pasa ahora con el título de Duque de Edimburgo tras su muerte?
The Telegraph explica que lo hereda automáticamente el Príncipe Carlos, como su hijo mayor. Pero no es un título que llevará para siempre. Como ocurre con tantos rituales arcanos de la monarquía, el título de Duque de Edimburgo sigue una inusual línea de sucesión.
Cuando un nuevo monarca llega al trono, se dice que sus títulos preexistentes se “funden en la Corona”, lo que significa que los títulos dejan de existir. Pero el monarca es libre de hacer una nueva “creación” de esos títulos: el “Duque de Edimburgo” ha tenido tres creaciones desde que se otorgó por primera vez en 1726.
Todo esto significa que el título de Duque de Edimburgo será de nueva creación para el Príncipe Eduardo cuando se fusione en la Corona es decir, cuando Carlos se convierta en rey.
Antes de que el Príncipe Eduardo se casara con Sophie Rhys-Jones en 1999, fue nombrado Conde de Wessex. También se anunció que, con el tiempo, se convertiría en Duque de Edimburgo.
Sería especialmente apropiado, dada no sólo la cercanía del Príncipe Eduardo a su padre, sino también su papel en el Premio Internacional del Duque de Edimburgo. El Príncipe Eduardo es presidente de su comité y ha hecho mucho por promover la institución. Él mismo ha ganado la medalla de oro del premio por una caminata de 60 millas y cuatro días en Escocia.
El título se creó en 1726, cuando Jorge I nombró a su nieto el Príncipe Federico como primer Duque de Edimburgo. Jorge I murió en 1727, por lo que Federico se convirtió también en Príncipe de Gales.
Federico, apodado “Griff”, no sólo recibió el título de duque de Edimburgo de su abuelo. También fue marqués de la isla de Ely, conde de Eltham, vizconde de Launceston y barón de Snowdon.
El primer duque de Edimburgo llevó una vida poco satisfactoria, alejado de sus padres, Jorge II y la reina Carolina. No llegó a Inglaterra hasta 1728, ya con 21 años y siendo nativo de habla alemana. Era un salvaje, aficionado al vino, las mujeres y el juego. Pero también tenía un lado culto, apoyando la Ópera de la Nobleza en Londres y tocando el violonchelo y la viola. Pero, después de que el primer Primer Ministro, Sir Robert Walpole, y el Rey desaprobaran el matrimonio, se casó con una aristócrata alemana, Augusta de Saxe-Gotha, que sólo tenía 16 años. Handel se encargó de la música de la boda.
El primer duque de Edimburgo, que no dejaba de pedir dinero prestado, se convirtió en una fuente creciente de molestias para su padre. El sentimiento se intensificó cuando sacó a la embarazada Augusta de Hampton Court en medio de la noche, para que Jorge I y la Reina no pudieran presenciar el nacimiento, como era la costumbre real.
Pero el primer Duque de Edimburgo nunca llegaría al trono. Murió de una lesión pulmonar, con sólo 44 años, en 1751, cuando su padre, Jorge II, era rey. La leyenda dice que el príncipe Federico, un gran aficionado al cricket, murió de un golpe en los pulmones con una pelota de cricket.
Su hijo, el príncipe Jorge, heredó su título de duque de Edimburgo en 1751, y lo mantuvo hasta 1760, cuando se convirtió en Jorge III y sus títulos se fusionaron con la Corona. Fue duque de Edimburgo entre los 12 y los 22 años. A los 21, se enamoró de Lady Sarah Lennox, hermana del duque de Richmond, pero Jorge II tenía más interés en que se casara con la princesa alemana, Sofía Carolina de Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. En su lugar, tras llegar al trono, se casó con otra princesa alemana, Carlota de Mecklemburgo-Strelitz.
