Una de cada 500 personas recibe vacuna contra el COVID-19 en los países pobres

En los países de bajos ingresos, solo una de cada quinientas personas en promedio recibió una de las vacunas disponibles contra la COVID-19, mientras que en los países ricos una de cada cuatro personas ya está inmunizada total o parcialmente.

Así lo reveló la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), tras anunciar que Greta Thunberg, líder del movimiento juvenil que reclama soluciones al cambio climático, le ha donado 100 mil euros para respaldar su trabajo en favor de una distribución equitativa de las vacunas.

La contribución se realizará a través de la fundación de Thunberg, la activista sueca que con quince años lanzó en 2018 un movimiento de protesta que tuvo repercusión internacional y que denunciaba la inacción de la clase política y de los actores económicos frente al agravamiento del cambio climático.

Los 100 mil euros irán al programa COVAX, creado por la OMS y otras instituciones para financiar la compra de vacunas y su distribución entre los países de ingresos medios y bajos.

El objetivo es que en esos países se vacune a, al menos, los grupos de mayor riesgo, como trabajadores de la sanidad, personas mayores y a quienes sufren de enfermedades crónicas, lo que las hace especialmente vulnerables a la infección que puede provocar la COVID-19.

Sin embargo, las vacunas siguen concentradas en una decena de países.
