El artista puertorriqueño Ricky Martin se unió este domingo a la celebración del Día Mundial de la Salud Mental, admitiendo que la pandemia de la COVID-19 le provocó ansiedad, uno de los trastornos mentales más comunes a nivel mundial.
«Como cualquier padre, la pandemia me ha provocado ansiedad», arranca Martin en un video colgado en su cuenta de Twitter, como parte de una campaña de Unicef sobre el impacto de la COVID-19 en la salud mental de niños, niñas y jóvenes y que podría perdurar a largo plazo y sobre cómo hablar con esto sobre sus sentimientos.
Martin prosigue admitiendo que se ha sentido «preocupado por cómo están mis propios hijos, por la salud de mi familia y por cómo vamos a superar esta situación».
Por suerte, el padre de Lucia Martin-Yosef, Renn y los gemelos Matteo y Valentino afirma: «puedo proteger a mis hijos de la mayoría de mis preocupaciones, pero para muchas familias no es así».
«Demasiados niños están sufriendo porque sus madres y sus padres están sufriendo preguntándose cómo van a sobrevivir un día más. Para hacer lo mejor por los niños, tenemos que mejorar la salud mental de los progenitores. Cuando apoyamos a las madres, padres y cuidadores, apoyamos a los niños y a los jóvenes», enfatiza Martin.
La campaña «¿Qué pasa por tu mente?» explica cómo pueden iniciar los progenitores la conversación sobre la salud mental con sus hijos basado en su edad.
Los trastornos mentales afectan a unos 16 millones de adolescentes en América Latina y el Caribe y hacen que las economías de la región dejen de percibir más de 30 mil millones de dólares anuales al «impedir» que puedan trabajar, alertó Unicef esta pasada semana.
Alrededor del 15 % de los adolescentes entre 10 y 19 años de América Latina y el Caribe sufren algún trastorno mental diagnosticado, lo que supone cerca de 16 millones de jóvenes, siendo esta la región del mundo con las tasas más altas.
«A nivel global, este porcentaje es del 13 %, en nuestra región es del 15 %, un poco más elevado que la media» mundial, detalló la especialista regional en Adolescencia y VIH del Unicef para América Latina y el Caribe, Alejandra Trossero.
El Caribe mantiene «una media un poco más alta, de entre el 15 % y 18 %» con respecto al resto de los países de la región, los cuales en su mayoría no cuentan sistemas para reportar y registrar este tipo de problemas mentales entre la población joven.
