Un exfuncionario de Hugo Chávez que se convirtió en el colaborador más importante de Estados Unidos en las investigaciones sobre la corrupción en Venezuela podría quedar libre en cuestión de meses, tras recibir una reducción de su condena original de 10 años de prisión.
La sentencia de Alejandro Andrade Cedeño, quien se había declarado culpable de haber participado en una asociación ilícita para lavar más de 1.000 millones de dólares de sobornos, fue reducida a poco menos de tres años y medio de prisión (42 meses) a través de una orden firmada por la jueza federal Robin Rosenberg.
Andrade, quien ascendió de guardaespaldas a tesorero del expresidente Chávez, fue condenado en octubre de 2018 y permanece detenido desde febrero de 2019. Es el testigo más importante que ha tenido hasta ahora Estados Unidos para investigar la corrupción del gobierno del fallecido mandatario venezolano.
La reducción del 65% de su condena tiene lugar en momentos en que el gobierno estadounidense ha puesto su mirada también en el actual presidente de Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro. Esta semana fue extraditado para enfrentar un proceso judicial Alex Saab, un empresario colombiano acusado de lavar dinero proveniente de negocios corruptos con Venezuela y que se espera colabore también con las autoridades estadounidenses en investigaciones relacionadas con el presente gobierno venezolano.
Los abogados de Andrade no respondieron los mensajes de The Associated Press en busca de comentarios.
En su orden, la jueza determinó que Andrade permanezca por ahora detenido.
Después de dejar su cargo en el gobierno venezolano, Andrade se mudó al sur de la Florida. Vivía en una mansión rodeada de caballos en Wellington, un área al noroeste de Miami conocida por sus actividades hípicas.
Desde la llegada de Chávez al poder a finales de los 90, el sur de Florida se convirtió en la cuna de la comunidad venezolana más numerosa de Estados Unidos. Muchos son exiliados, pero también hay empresarios y exfuncionarios del gobierno.
Al comienzo de su proceso judicial Andrade pagó una fianza de un millón de dólares para mantener su libertad.
Aunque en diciembre de 2017 se declaró culpable de haber conspirado para lavar dinero, su caso permaneció en secreto por 11 meses.
Para obtener una sentencia leve había sellado un acuerdo de culpabilidad con la fiscalía, en el que se había comprometido a colaborar en las investigaciones del gobierno estadounidense. A través de ese pacto entregó también a las autoridades más de 260 millones de dólares en efectivo y activos, incluyendo una mansión en la playa de la elegante ciudad de Palm Beach, vehículos de lujo, caballos de saltos hípicos que fueron subastados, y relojes Rolex.
Su colaboración con los fiscales ha ayudado al gobierno ha presentar acusaciones contra otros venezolanos aliados de Chávez, entre ellos el empresario de la televisión Raúl Gorrín, que según los cargos que enfrenta habría pagado millones de dólares a funcionarios de su país para que le ayudaran a adquirir los derechos de operaciones cambiarias a tasas sobrevaluadas.
Gorrín, uno de los propietarios de Globovisión, está prófugo de la justicia estadounidense. Ha negado su participación en negocios corruptos.
