Al menos dos personas de nacionalidad cubana murieron al naufragar la lancha en la que viajaban cerca de la costa norte de la provincia de Mayabeque (occidente de Cuba), informó el Ministerio del Interior.
La embarcación, una lancha rápida registrada en Florida (EEUU) iba «sobrecargada», con hasta 23 personas, 14 hombres, siete mujeres y dos menores, y navegaba en «condiciones hidrometeorológicas adversas».
El ministro cubano de Exteriores, Bruno Rodríguez, responsabilizó este domingo a EEUU por estas muertes a través de Twitter.
El incumplimiento por parte de EEUU de los acuerdos migratorios con Cuba, concebidos para impedir la migración insegura, se une al reforzamiento del bloqueo y juntos tienen culpa en las pérdidas de vidas, afirmó.

El número de cubanos que trata de alcanzar la costa de EEUU de forma irregular ha aumentado en los últimos meses. Desde el pasado 1 de octubre, las tripulaciones de la Guardia Costera han interceptado a 339 cubanos frente a los 313 del año fiscal 2019 y a los 259 del año fiscal 2018.
En los ejercicios fiscales 2017 y 2016 se interceptaron en el mar a 1.468 y 5.396 cubanos, respectivamente.
La puerta de entrada de cubanos sin permisos legales a EEUU estuvo abierta hasta el 12 de enero de 2017, cuando el entonces presidente Barack Obama les retiró los beneficios migratorios al cancelar por orden ejecutiva la política de «pies secos/pies mojados».
Desde entonces, los cubanos que ingresan de forma ilegal a EEUU carecen del permiso temporal de residencia y, en caso de pedir un asilo político, lo tendrán que solicitar en igualdad de condiciones que el resto de inmigrantes.
